Just Horsin’ Around

Here’s another set of images pulled from the vault, these from two separate dates in 2003 and 2007, taken at the Ellis Park thoroughbred horse racing facility in Henderson, Kentucky. These were taken with what we would now consider “old school” Nikon D1X and D100 camera bodies. I’d like to think my skills behind the [...]
Southern Indiana Classic

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to shoot my first competitive running race for the folks at ChronoTrack, who manufacture event timing and tracking systems and wanted a collection of journalistic images for their website to highlight their hometown event. With mostly free reign to roam and cover the event from all sorts of [...]
Unleashing Indy!

Here’s another one that’s finally getting some love here on the blog: the NHRA Unleashed debut at the O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis. This race, err show was recorded for a PINKS-like television show that ran on the FSN network over over the winter. Click here to view a gallery of images from the event.
NMCA Closes The Gates On Gateway

My final racing event of the season and the final race for the foreseeable future of the Gateway International Raceway just outside St. Louis was the NMCA World Finals, which bookended the 2010 NMCA campaign. The Finals were moved to St. Louis from Memphis Motorsports Park, which shut down following the 2009 running of the same [...]
Sun Sets On NMRA Season

The NMRA’s annual World Finals at the scenic Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky is the largest all-Ford drag racing event in the country, drawing record crowds and racers from all corners of the nation. This year’s event didn’t disappoint, with new national records set in several categories and exciting championship battles that [...]
NHRA in Hotlanta!

I recently shot the NHRA Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals down in Commerce, GA where I learned first hand why they’ve always called it “Hotlanta.” Although providing semi-live coverage and updates from the track, I was pretty focused on using all of the available time that I wasn’t slapping away at my laptop keys to [...]
Muscling Through The Midwest

Back in May, I took a short 2.5 hour drive north to the small town of Mount Meridian, Indiana, site of the scenic Putnam Park Road Course that would serve as the opening day for the first annual Midwest Muscle Car Challenge. While I’d never had the opportunity to shoot at a road course, years of browsing ALMS and GrandAm galleries had given me a few ideas to tinker with.
The Big Bad Wolfe

In mid-March, I had the opportunity to shoot the cover and profile images for Drag Illustrated magazine. Editor Wes Buck had chosen chassis builder and ultra tough racer David Wolfe for the cover, who just a couple of weeks prior had put on a performance for the ages at the Radial vs. The World event [...]
RAD!

In the fall of 2008 and spring of 2009, I spent some occasional evenings at a local BMX track that took me back to my youth when I spent every waking hour and then some trying to kill myself on my Mongoose. With the track being no more than a mile from home and practices [...]
Flying South

I recently headed down south for a couple of weeks to assist my good friend Chris Simmons with his drag racing photography biz at a couple events: ‘The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia’ in Cecil, GA, and the IHRA Mardi Gras Nationals in Baton Rouge, LA. Below are images of NHRA Pro Stock [...]
Thunder and Carnage on the Ohio

Since I was knee high to a grasshopper, I’ve been fascinated with the sights and sounds of the unlimited hydroplanes that have visited our city every summer for the last 31 years as part of the Freedom Festival. During my youth, this series – full of history – was positioned in the upper echelons of [...]
NMRA Blazing a Trail to Columbus

Back in early September I covered the NMRA event at National Trail Raceway just outside Columbus, Ohio for the folks at StangTV, and in my quest to catch up up on blogging some of the my older material in between that of current material, I’m finally getting to this one. Unlike my ADRL coverage which [...]
May day in Speedway

As a born and bred Hoosier and a nearly lifelong fan of open wheel racing, the month of May is truly a time to behold. And although raceday is a magical happening, sitting amongst a sea of 300,000 rabid fans and the sight of 33 cars storming down the front stretch 3-wide, an equally enjoyable [...]
Evansville Otters random images

I shot a handful of games this season for the Evansville Otters, a local franchise of the independent Frontier League comprised of teams in small to medium-sized markets around the midwest. Many big leaguers, past and present, have passed through the locker rooms of these little known teams that harken back to the golden years [...]
Simmering in St. Louis

I covered the ADRL event in St. Louis this weekend for the folks at PowerTV, where the wind chill was a comfortable (?!) 106 degrees on race day.
Rain and Shine at the Brickyard

I had the rare opportunity this weekend to shoot the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, one of the premiere races on the NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule, for the Indianapolis Star. As as stringer (and a first time stringer for The Star at that), I would be helping their staffers in gathering images for their in-depth [...]
Giving Tri a shot (yes, pun)…
While the majority of my work and my passion lies in photojournalism and sports photography, I’ve become increasingly interested in learning portraiture, or to narrow it down more…environmental portraiture. This style of portrait, encompasses the subjects’ environment and personality, and if done effectively, tells their story in a manner that a white studio wall cannot.
