My subject for this shoot was my friend and amateur cyclist Knate Bartholomew, who obliged to stand in for my attempt at an athletic, semi-environmental portrait. While many portrait photographers prefer a studio or other indoor location, I’m partial to the look of soft, studio lighting on a subject, meshed with outdoor natural light.
Despite the impending severe weather, we went ahead with the shoot, and it paid off with a killer sky as a backdrop for many of the shots.
Lighting for the shoot was a single Alien Bee B800 with only the silver reflector (too windy for the windsail…err octabox), and a single Nikon SB800 speedlight for rim lighting.
Andrew Wolf is a photographer, graphic artist, and writer based in the midwestern city of Evansville, Indiana, His primary emphasis is journalism and sports imagery. Growing up around the world of auto racing, Andrew began his photography career at a young age, capturing the raw speed and emotion of the action-packed sport. It was through this venue that he developed his unique style and drive to accurately tell stories through impactful and emotional imagery, which has been seen in several print and digital news media outlets over the years.
